HEMA (Hydroxyethyl methacrylate) is the abbreviated name for the monomer found in gel nail polish. This monomer is necessary for curing the coating upon exposure to ultraviolet rays. The monomer consists of very small molecules that easily penetrate the skin and can dissolve in water. In 2020, the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety in Europe (SCCS) drew attention to this component, after which experts found that HEMA, upon contact with the skin, MAY (this doesn't mean it does) cause allergies, as well as irritation of mucous membranes and upper respiratory tract. The new Hema-free formula does not affect the quality and properties of gel polishes, as well as bases or topcoats; they remain of the same quality, color, and texture.
